Plex pass going up

I have my server at home and can watch stuff easily from my phone or share my library easily with friends/family without having to share my account log in information.
Fair, I don't share. I thought about it but then the idea of if my stuff is down to need to support them. Ugh...

plex is easier to use for the average user and more widely available. Easier for non tech people to setup and use. That is why I use plex. or else I wouldve stayed on kodi over a decade ago.
Ya, that makes sense. My first setup was not easy (learning curve or if things got better). The SMB share setup is still wacky. Install is super easy now. Then point at shared folder (tv vs movie) tell the thing what is in that folder. Wait for scan.
The killer new feature is it can pull the video to the device. Before this was a file you needed to edit then did not ever seem to work. Why this is a cool feature. I can have my family start a movie and wait like 5 minutes then take the NAS/network off lline for over an hour if needed.
I used to park drives for power saving but the issue was when the movie was paused it would play then stutter as the drives spun back up. I may start to park the drives again instead of always spinning.

Yikes, that's a big jump.

I already have a pass. I'm honestly surprised they have lasted as long as they have and not gone the way of AnyDVD and their "lifetime" pass.
Nothing is forever these days.

Glad I got the Pass years ago for $90 IIRC. The biggest deal for me is that Plex has a PS5 app, which is my main projector-connected media player and big screen gaming device. The other services may be gaining in features and usability, but they'd require switching devices, plus another remote control, and another set of cables to run. With streaming services in general getting more walled and expensive while honestly not improving the playback experience at all, having my own self-hosted streaming box is more and more valuable.

Yea they are 100% trying to kill the lifetime sub. I wouldn't be surprised if they start taking features away if not out right kill all current lifetime subs in a few years.

I got my money's worth over the years and wouldn't be too surprised/upset if they decided this was a necessary decision; however, I would immediately switch or stop hosting completely. It's a cool service that was worth the $50 (or close to that I paid). If they need more money, just spend less on junk nobody uses and unnecessary updates.

I'm glad that I already have a lifetime pass, but even if it doesn't impact me directly, any platform that becomes less appealing to new users isn't going to have a bright future.

I use the hell out of Plex Pass features. DVR, Subtitles, Intro/Credit skip, PlexDash, multiple editions/versions, h/w transcoding, HDR->SDR tone mapping, and all of the Plex Pass features in Plexamp: Lyrics, Downloads, Mix builders, Track/artist/Album radio. I'm looking into a RaspberryPi endpoint now that Alexa compatability is going away (and I was using the hell out of that too!)

Honestly, I'd go back to monthly Plex Pass for these features if my LIfetime Plex Pass were scaled back/feature reduced. Jellyfin/Emby/fill-in-the-blank is not an option for me.

There's no way they can pare back the features on the lifetime pass if they're still selling it. Plex raising the price of it is great for existing lifetime pass owners, it means it's going to continue to be supported. It's when they stop selling it altogether is when you'll need to be worried.

They are getting acquired, or getting a big investment to massively expand and mainstream their services. Lifetime subs have zero value to them at this point. They are getting their ducks in a row for some pivot/expansion.

That isn't out of the realm of possibility, but just keep in mind that the massive price increases of almost all relevant tech hardware, due to AI, is probably impacting Plex's business expenses also.

It at least seems they took previous lifetime users into account before making this announcement. Hoping I can make it to 2030 before they release Plex 2: Electric Boogaloo to kill all of us "freeloaders" and I have to switch to something else (this may or may not coincide with the actuarial tables for my in-laws life expectancy).

Here is what I miss from the early days, just after they switched from OSXBMC to Plex. You could email Elan a crash dump, and get a fix in a few hours. You could request a new feature and actually get it. You could make suggestions and they would actually listen. They didn't shitcan functionality that was in it from day 1. This is when it was a project of love, not money. All they care about now is putting some lipstick on this pig and getting some PE firm to buy it out.

I ended up getting the pass last year. I tried a few other things, but main reason was remote viewing. Device support is there for Plex and simple to use. Other apps didnt quite have the platform supports i needed.

That and DVR for me

Not sure who all remembers a product called "PlayOn".. but I could see Plex pulling a stunt similar to how PlayOn did with their "lifetime" licensing model.

This screams huge cash influx.. before maybe going to the "next version of Plex".. and then have in the fine print that your "lifetime" license is only good for v1.0.. and not the new v2.0 version ..
etc.. etc.. some bull$hit shenanigans like that

$750 is crazy. Fortunately I paid for the lifetime pass over 10 years ago.

I gambled and hedged my bets, but I paid $119 for Emby Premiere last night and run it side-by-side now with Plex. I don't mind paying for something worthwhile, and remote access for F&F is important, which is why JellyFin is a non-starter. If Plex ever jumps the shark, I have Emby in my back pocket now.

That's not a bad idea. Emby is my backup option. May as well jump on it before they jump up like plex is doing.

Honestly, I've been having a ton of remote view and server connection problems that it might be a good time to test it out.

Grabbed my lifetime back in 2017 for $120, I've certainly gotten my use out of it. I can't consider Emby for a backup, because they are just one step behind pulling whatever games Plex may pull. I hope Plex sticks around long enough for Jellyfin to get in a better state, several of my friends & family are barely capable of using Plex (and they still transcode half the time.) I've been dragging my feet testing Jellyfin, maybe this is the year I really give it a try with a few friends who are more capable.

Got mine on BlackFriday 2017 for $79. I use it and like it. We will see if it lasts :|

Not as early as some of you but still feels good

$750... haha they're outta their minds.
They are gonna go to subscription and more data collection. They put the cloud authentication in place years ago. I remember people having issues on their own LAN when either the auth server whent down PR some sort of L2 wide internet issues some years back

Trans code is no biggie with Intel ARC if need cheaper GPU well at least until recent "shortages"

Hopefully they don't nuke existing lifetime subs down the road, I'm one of the $100 lifetime users lol. I like Jellyfin but I have multiple family members who all remote stream from my plex server so until other apps can improve remote streaming and the amount of devices with the app available they're unfortunately useless to me. For all of plex's faults the fact that every major device has the app now and all I have to do is add my family's plex account to my friends/sharing list to get them setup for streaming is a huge reason why plex is still my main.
