New Linux gaming box

So my Cachy OS box seems to have died on me. The power supply seems fine, it's less than a year old, but the system does nothing when you hit the on button. No blips, wheezes, fans turning, fires, smoke. Just nothing. I swapped the mobo and all to a different case, still nada.
I will probably dissect the box and see if the 13400f processor, ram, nvme, and 7800xt are still ok. In the mean time, my Manjaro box will be my go to Linux gamer for a bit.


So, I am thinking heavily about jumping to the LGA 1851 platform. I was going to skip the generation, but I am intrigued with the 270k. Sounds like it should be an upgrade to the previous 13400f. My struggle will be finding RAM, but I may be able to reuse the 5600 sticks until a deal can be had for something more suitable. Looks like I should be aiming for low cas 7200, yes?

I have been looking at Z890 itx mobo's. I don't really want an Asrock, (I have had various products and they have been hit or miss) Gigabyte might be a contender. I see there is an MSI out there for a reasonable price. I haven't had an MSI board since the slot A days. I think I am going to avoid Asus this round.

Curious to see if there are any Z890 MSI user's that want to chime in, or if there is another option that does pretty well.
This will be my new Cachy OS gaming box. I may swap a 4080 for the 9070xt in my 7800x3d system and use it for this new setup as well.

So to recap my rambling, I have a case, power supply, temporary RAM, a GPU, NVME, just looking for an itx mobo suggestion and RAM speed.

Thoughts?

I went ahead and purchased the 270k. Looking for some sane deal on RAM..... Looking at something in the 7200 or better flavor.

Still looking for itx suggestions. Anyone? Bueller?

Well the MSI Z890 leaves me feeling a little underwhelmed on the vrm cooling. Twin thunderbolt and four fan headers is nice. I don't really need the four M.2 slots. (sigh)

I find myself coming back the the Asus ROG Strix Z890-i, but that price......

I should scrap it and do another AMD build. yeesh. The 270k will be in my hands Wed.

I'm gonna look at Biostar..... Nobody looks at these forums anymore huh?

Biostar? Serious ?

270k is nice CPU, but with 5600MT/s RAM, don't expect miracles. For pure gaming 9800x3D is best, if you need more cores and wanna play with Intel setup - yeah 270k is best for new CPU + 7200 RAM. Just go for normal board and not Biostar,

Asus and MSI are the only motherboards I buy, though a lot of [H] members like Gigabyte. FWIW, I'd stick with AMD for a gaming build.

Lol, I figured Biostar would get some comments. I haven't seen a Biostar board for sale in a day and an age. Never owned one, nor would I actually consider one

I have a 9800x3d, 7800x3d, 13600k, 14700k, 8700g, the 13400f bellied up, a smattering of laptops, and a minisforum UM 773 for downloading "Linux" distro's. Plus some other frivolous junk.
Most systems are listed in my signature.

And yes of course 5600 RAM would suck for a minute until prices for 32-64 gig of RAM are easier to swallow. This box is purely to be for Linux gaming. I doubt I do much else with it, at least yet.
As I said, I have temporary RAM, a GPU, NVME, power supply all ready to go until the CPU shows up and I make up my mind on which it mobo I want.

We all spend money on hardware for Windows game boxes, and just cobble together left overs for Linux stuff. I thought it time to change that for myself.

I will have to re-assess my case situation. The Sapphire 9070xt Nitro+ will not fit in my NZXT 210, CM NR200, it'll be a shoe horn to get into a Dan A4, but then a decent air cooler for the CPU is out. It may fit in a Hyte Revolt I guess, but the decent air cooler is out on that too. Instead of itx, I may look at matx boards.

Ugh, hobbies are expensive.

Could get one of those fancy new vertical cases. I think kyle made a thread about one he put together for his kid. I wouldn't recommend a fractal mood, but I like it despite it's flaws.

I think I recall him posting about it. I may look at those options. I looked at the Mood. The Sapphire 9070xt won't fit and only a max height of 114 mm for CPU cooler. I don't want to do a AOI with this build. Unless I have too.

His was in a NCORE 100. You can get the Air version starting at $78 from amazon resale, the Max (comes with clc iirc) commands quite a premium, however.

That's right. I remember now. Damn, that is a healthy price on the Max, but I may go that route.

Depends on the mobo I choose tho. I need to research fitment issues with the AOI

Nice rigs

The GIGABYTE Z890M Gaming X mATX model seems like a good choice as a compact option. There aren't many options in this form factor, but this model will likely fit in your case.

Yeah, this hobby is becoming more and more expensive

So after looking at the NCORE 100 Max, it may not have enough to keep the cpu from throttling. So I have been thinking, I'm probably going to ditch Win 11 on my 7800x3d box, run Cachy on that, and put a 4080 with the 270k running win 11.
The 4080 is an Asus Pro Art variant. It's not a huge beast of a card as the 9070xt. Then I can run the CM NR200, Thermalright PA, 4080, 8TB WD Black SN850x, I have an sfx 1000w power supply for all that.

Saving some money for RAM! It's not going to win any fps competitions, but should be a solid box still

I think I decided on the MSI MPG Z890i Edge Ti. Ten 110A power stages, eight 10 Gbps ports and two Thunderbolt ports, 5 Gbit LAN. I only have a 2.5 network at home, but that could change one day.
Apparently the VRM cooling is loud, but seems to suit. Fans can be changed out.

Now I have to find that RAM.


That should get me a new Linux gamer, and kill the itch for the new build. The current 13600k, RTX 4070 with Manjaro will probably get handed off to a buddy after I put Windows back on it. He ain't figured out that there Linux stuff yet.

I've got a biostar, a gigabyte, and an a stock MOBO and all get the job done. Read specs and reviews, buy the cheapest that meets your needs.

This RAM pricing is BS. Almost $600 for 32 gig of low cas 7200. (sigh)

But it's on its way.

Next up, settle for certain on a mobo.

Processor should be here today, RAM on Monday. Still haven't ordered a mobo. I still haven't dissected the 13400f system yet. I don't think the Asus B760-i is that old, but who knows. I bought it from a fellow Hocp'r. It'd be nice if the cpu is still fine. I have another B760-i board that has never been used. It's Gigabyte flavor and uses DDR4.
I can throw it in the mobo and see if it's in working order and probably sell it to recoup a little cost.

RAM wasn't supposed to be delivered till Monday. It's coming today.

I ordered the MSI board and it's due from a slow boat from China on like the 7th of May.

The 270 is a great cpu for the price been eyeing that one for a build for a family member but damn memory is insanely high right now.

Nothing worse than waiting on the one last component to get things moving. Fans are installed, power supply thrown in and then wait.

Ordered the mobo on the 23rd and it has just now been received by USPS in Seattle. Expected delivery date 7th to the 18th to the KC area........

I hate USPS, and the longer they have it, the higher the statistics go to never seeing it.

I guess maybe in June I can complete this build. Contemplating finding the mobo somewhere else and shipping the original order back when it finally decides to show.

Sweet bebe Jesus..... Made the mistake of purchasing the mobo through Newegg. Ended up being from a seller tinggangmaoyi on Newegg. First I got a USPS tracking number which says that it is due today. The seller tinggangmaoyi says it was delivered by Amazon on the 3rd. I was home on Sunday and checked the camera footage. Nothing.

Seems odd to submit a USPS tracking and then claim it was delivered already by Amazon.
Order date 4-23-26
USPS in possession of the package on 5-4-26
Expected delivery 5-8 to 5-18-26.

Newegg still shows the order not delivered, but this seller tinggangmaoyi says Amazon delivered it already.

Is Amazon fulfilling Newegg orders these days? I didn't get it from Amazon because it was $10 cheaper on the Egg. So why would a seller put it out for $10 cheaper and then have it sent from Amazon and send a tracking number for another delivery service? (sigh). I would like a drink please.

WTF mang, and I still don't have this box built. It's my fault for not paying attention to who the seller was, I usually filter sold and shipped by Newegg. That's what I get for not paying attention. Now I have to try and get my money back. Yay.
Also as of this morning, tinggangmaoyi store no longer exists on the Newegg site.

Live and learn and off to get funds back and shop elsewhere, not that I expect to get the money back.
