Save BIOS settings by removing and replacing CMOS battery while PC is running?

I want to replace the CMOS battery in my old PC before giving it away. Will the BIOS not lose its configuration if I do it while the system is powered on? I can put some tape on the battery to make sure it doesn't fall and short against anything.
