Most of those VLANs don't need routing. However, yes, I am going to have multiple virtualized software-based firewalls do the routing. I chose pfSense because I have experience with it.
#1 priority is to learn. Secondary priorities are speed and security within my home lab
Much appreciated. I know my post was overwhelming, thank you for taking the time to write that up. I will refer to it when my switch arrives
The question is mostly network so it's in the Networking subforum, but it would be very helpful if VMware folks chimed in: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1807416. Thanks!
I just bought my first managed switch. It's a Zyxel 1910-24G. I understand the benefits of VLAN for performance and security, and I made a decision to make use of VLAN, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how I am going to implement it. It's a fairly basic design for most network...
Look what I found! I never saw anyone post this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_fanless_layer_2_switches. This can be very helpful to people that have the same question as me.
Judging by that chart, I made a decision to purchase a Zyxel 1910 over the HP 1910 because it has the...

My priorities, in no particular order, are:
Very light use, I will only ever use about 20-25% of the 24Gbps available
Quiet
Rackmountable...
I have been using free ESXi for years. I now want to set up two matching hosts in order to make use of advanced features such as Vmotion, DRS, HA, etc. Honestly, I don't understand VMware's product line. There seems to be hundreds of software titles. Can someone tell me what I should be...
Very good advice in this thread. If I wanted to archive the data to the point where it's a pain in the butt to restore with proprietary apps (but at least it's backed up), it seems I would use Crashplan.
However, it seems what I want does not exist. I have been spoiled by so many Cloud...
I have a storage system (ZFS) at home that is approaching 90% utilization so I am looking to archive about 5TB of data that I almost never access. I am interested in paying for a service, rather than building/upgrading on-site systems.
My goals are:
Very low price that is comparable to...
