They could have and should have just copied COD. release a classic battlefield game for $60, then make a free BR with cosmetics early next year. I still think that's happening.
 
While waiting for BF2042 I installed some previous Battlefield games;

- BF1. Never bought this game. Last week I see for sale for just $4.99 so hard to pass up. Graphics ultra look great game was fun. But it just didn’t do it for me. Seemed a bit generic.

- BF5. Haven’t played in a year. Graphics maxed look super good. But there’s too few vehicles. I want to see a dozen fighter planes in the sky and like 10 tanks or something. BF5 has too many city maps or close quarter maps. I’d like to see HUGE outdoor maps with a boatload of vehicles.

- BF4. Wow haven’t played this classic in a long time. Just the best. To me this is the last best Battlefield game. Play style is spot on. Always lots of vehicles to jump in. Class system is great.


So of those recent battlefield games to me BF4 is hands down the best, mainly for the vehicles and lots of them, which to me is Battlefield hopping in fun vehicles to fly and drive is what makes this series.

BF5 WW2 setting really needed way more vehicles in its maps. I wanted to see lots of Spitfires flying around on a map and lots of Tiger tanks. Not just a couple, but design gigantic maps to allow a theater of war. To me BF5 seems scaled down too small with not enough vehicles allowed per map. Would love to see squadron's of P51's like maybe 6 per side going after the German's with 6 of their fighter planes. And then like a dozen tanks battling it out.

This is highly subjective. I read an article somewhere with a statistic that said something like 90%+ of BF players play and prefer to play ground infantry, and not vehicular transport/combat. (Recon/sniping was included in "ground infantry"). And would use vehicles only as a means of returning to CQC hotspot areas faster.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I guess I'm the minority then and not the target audience. I hate the COD type of games, no vehicles, to me those are pure arcade kiddy console crap, just dumb arcade shooters.

Whereas BattleField always seemed more mature and thought out better having the vehicles be more like true battles and war. I just wish the WW2 themed BFV had super large maps with like a dozen fighter planes in the air and a dozen tanks out in HUGE big maps, and also have the infantry stuff too closer to the flag areas. If BF moved to mostly infantry shooting only and little to no vehicles, I'd stop playing.

BC2 vehicles were perfect. They were important in capturing an objective or transporting people.
The helicopters supported the infantry on the ground to help them advance.

Then when BF3 came along with Jets and attack helis, the air vehicles rarely supported troops on the ground.
If I had it my way, I would remove jets from the game. I still don't see a purpose for them. An attack heli is much more effective at applying persistent force on the ground.

There were still plenty of maps that catered to infantry in BF4. Golmud Railway had a very destructible town that worked great for infantry. They could very often ambush tanks. But because the place was destructible tanks and APCs could also join in. A lot of the maps were similar, even if lacking some of the destruction. Infantry and vehicles worked seamlessly in most maps.

BC2 had helicopters that worked much the same. I agree with the jets, they often seem to do their own thing but generally that isn't a problem. You can ignore them. But good jet players will become a pain for helicopters and players with the Q-5, Su-25 and A-10 did a good job of knocking out enemy tanks. I used to have some good runs in t hose. The fighters were there to knock out helis and attack planes. Some in some games the fighters would end up fighting themselves but in others they would allow their team to fight without much worry from air attack. In general it worked out well.

I haven't played air at all during my time on BF4 because of performance anxiety and taking a better pilot's spot so I may be wrong, but I thought it was a rock paper scissors deal - helis take out ground units (infantry and vehicles) and jets take out helis. Not the case?

Remove jets and you imbalance the ecosystem, because it would remove the main predator of Helicopters, that would in turn be more free to farm infantry kills and stomp about the countryside.

Where a no-jets scenario would be really bad is in "air truce" situations - that's where dedicated Attack Heli crews on opposing teams agree not to attack each other, so they can focus on infantry kill farming, instead of spending the entire round in a stalemate having to dogfight each other and trade TV missiles like lawndarts. And it sickens me to have participated in this shameful practice.

In BC2 tracer darts and the Carl Gustaf brought down Helis fast.
I was deadly with the Carl Gustaf. Like 5+ helis destroyed a round and others had similar numbers.

Helis would fly up and people would bail on the objective or used as kamikaze weapons because they couldn't stay up long enough.

IMO, In BF3/BF4 they took out the darts and Gustav so the Jets can have something to do.

The joke about BC2 was for a good while helicopter flares didn't work at all on pc, this was reported to dice who went and checked and informed us it was working on the console version. So since it was working on that it must have been working on pc...apparently. :cautious:

As for jets, i always found them pointless myself, a lot of the time they would fuck off to an area of the map to have their own sad little dogfights, which in battlefield terms meant they would turn circles for half an hour like a dog chasing its tail until someone lost the will to live and decided to faceplant into the ground. BC2 was better for not having jets, helicopters were far more practical.

Looks like more fun than I had in the Beta hope the TDM maps are small with reduced player counts. Then again I didn't try the spawn vechical thing in the Beta on the conquest map.

Between that and the guided flying hand grenade to take out helis, LOL.

I mean we already have anti air missiles and systems, I wonder how the grenades will work. I hope they give off a warning and can be evaded.

I did mainly buy this for Portal so I do hope there are many servers that dump the specialist gadgets.

Some of the gadgets do appear to border on the cartoonish stuff that we'd make fun of when it's in games 12 yr olds play. The wallhack of PAIK, or the riot shield ricocheting bullets back and killing the shooter?

Anyhoo, I'm still withholding judgment until I've got 5-10 hours into the finished game and can begin to get a feel for it as a whole.

But I'm also wondering Portal possibilities, like a wave shooter mode vs hundreds of robo dogs that are cranked up to uber powerful. The most absurd of everything basically. Which I don't see how they'll pull off, as the expectations of Portal now might even be higher than the main game.

You know one thing I never once thought of when I played battlefield games is "what race and sex is this war fighter?". Now I don't have to guess, I get to see 15 Grandma Betty Crockers running around with assault rifles playing war. I guess the Indian guy with special IT powers is borderline racist though, so that's almost ironic.

Instead of just having anonymous generic characters that didn't provoke identity questions, now we get it shoved in our faces.

Women have the right to play and enjoy video games too and they feel they want to be represented and included, which means having the ability to play a female character in a video games. Why would you get so upset about that and cancel a pre order of a game you made for it?

You have a hate boner for women maybe is the issue?

(Idk if I agree with the ethics/practicality of sending women to fight physical wars like that, making it a bit immersion breaking to me, but that's just an irrelevant personal opinion at that point. If they volunteer, then whatever, let them choose that)

I still don't, who has time to check out who they just shot (outside of the occational opportunity to tbag). None of the specialists are rainbow kid insanity, their all just people, their outfits are all fairly realistic especially compaired to the neon vomit that is CoD. Sorry they are not all generic white or middle eastern dude #267432.

Also you get the concept of specalist in these games right? They are always some named and identified individual, with a unique skill or set of skills. This isn't woke, its the literal concept of ingame specialist thats been around for a while now. I don't like specialists over classes, but thats not a woke/non-woke matter, its a game design matter.

I'm going to hazard the problem is not with the product on this one.

Right. My sister served during the Iraq war. Was in Kuwait and Iraq on the ground.
My friends in high school also went right after graduation. All African-American men and women.

Games have been generic but representation is important. But DICE in no way set an agenda of sex or race in the 2042 trailers so far.
BF:V was different, a one armed female hero in WWII was unrealistic for the period. Completely forced to pander to SJW groups.

Not a fan of the specialist system. Just cancel my pre-order. Feels like DICE/EA is trying to hard to be another COD or Apex Legends clone. I'm staying away from this game for now. Will wait till it hits the bargain bin.
 
I'm not going to cancel, I learned long ago that I have two choices, one is to participate and play a thing sorta like the thing I remember and want again, or not participate. Mehwarrior 5 is the perfect example of this, its not the MechWarrior I want, but it is still more MechWarrior so I'll take it and hope that maybe the resulting analytics give me more and a little better. The only way I'll get the game I want is if I made it and I'm not doing that.

It is a game. You skin color or gender doesn't need to match the character. What is next, only real soldiers can play the game because the game only represents soldiers? So we'll have to add dentist characters running around the battle field too I suppose.

I never once thought "I'm never going to play Tomb Raider or Mirror's Edge because I can't change her gender". I had no problems with Wei Shen in Sleeping Dogs either despite him looking different from me.

Only reason they push this stuff is to get brownie points from the SJW types, which takes away criticism from having to put effort into art style and legitimizes paid micro transactions.
 
See, I knew I should have taken a screenshot of my Betty White specialist calling out for a medic, next to another elderly woman player, meanwhile I see another Betty White rushing through the chaos to revive us... And she gets killed by Betty fucking White.

If I have to explain the problem with that, then surprise: you're what's wrong with modern video games.

Having worked in the DoD for the past 15 years, I do have to say I have noticed that male soldiers have been overtaken by the elderly and females. But yes, it's sexism to think seeing a bunch of elderly women shooting each other is jarring and doesn't belong in a video game. I mean Asian women Nazi soldiers in BFV really didn't break the immersion.

Congrats on your results from "24 and Me". Yes, I hate women, so much in fact that I *don't* want to be able to murder them by the dozens in a video game.

Everyone has a right to enjoy a video game. I'll never understand the self hating mentality that brings these kinds of arguments. One of my favorite games of the past 20 years: Mirror's Edge. Guess how many times I cared about the gender or ethnicity of the protagonist? Zero. The only people that care about gender or racial identity in games are those who seem to hate their gender or race, you've just convinced me.
