TQ Anniversary Edition has been updated quite extensively from the original game. I have not run into any issues aside from still needing to lock the game to 60 FPS to avoid physics oddities.

I purchased this evening and was immediately able to preload, are you logged into the “Blizzard Launcher”

When the public beta started, I was staring at the button to launch the game I preloaded when the time hit to start. The button didn't enable at the time... turns out I had to restart the launcher and then it worked.

If you leave your PC on and the launcher running, maybe this is the reason?

Some people were lvl 10-11 already so that really sucks if they were rolled back 50 minutes. I know it's not much at all in terms of time spent, but it'd be enough to piss me off for a bit.

Idk, it doesn't take much to get to lvl 10-11 (especially in a group). It is release day and it's not like blizzard doesn't have a history of botching releases.
 
They will be announcing a date that the ladder will start in the next couple of weeks. They knew there would be release day problems and decided to delay the ladder.

I am definitely waiting for the ladder to try to rush a character through all the acts.

From reading some reviews it seems this was not quite accurate. So you can play in online mode or offline mode.

Online mode has single and multiplayer available through blitz servers. No local multiplayer. Appears to have the same connection foibles as D3’s “always online.”

Offline mode needs a single check in and then it works totally offline, but just for single player.

So… if you don’t want to depend on blizzard’s servers for anything, stick to the original release. If you only want to play by yourself and don’t mind a one-time check in, you could go with the remake.

Ah well. Seemed so promising at first.

Honestly, I'm ok with this. It's unfortunate that it's loosing some functionality, but.... I'm ok with the tradeoff.
 
I lost a few levels earlier today but no biggie. My fire sorc has her Leaf and Stealth and I'm heading into the palace in Act 2 at level 20.
Calling it a night, my ass hurts. I need a new computer chair. If anyone has any recommendations...
 
Didn't they originally say those "trade offs" wouldn't be there at all? There was a lot of buzz when it was announced because they said they were keeping everything intact, including local offline MP. It was really going to be just a remaster with the old game underneath.

So the "trade off" is - you can play the game with updated graphics now. In exchange for that you can't mod it, and if you want the option to play MP which requires "online mode" then you better hope the blizz servers are working and your internet connection is stable.

I still don't see why they can't have it so online character files can't be used in offline modes, and vice versa, and allow fully offline SP/MP. They already did that for the original D2. Not having it in D3 was asinine but actively removing it from the D2 remake and claiming it's for protecting against cheating is downright insulting.

“Cheating” as in piracy. The technical alpha was cracked pretty quick IIRC.

Why are you positioning "consumers value game security over offline play" as a negative here? Most people have good internet and don't care if the game is "fully online". This really shouldn't be that surprising. Personally, I've had stable, reliable internet for like 16 years now. Yes, the servers are shit on day 1 like 75% of new online games. That'll be ironed out and then it won't really make any difference at all. D3 was fully online and no one even comments on that anymore.

Because to me it is a negative? Thought that was clear. I know they don't care. Doesn't change my opinion, however.
 
Anyone who loses a long held hardcore character because of a lag spike certainly will. Happened to me a few times when I still played.

But aside from that? Part of the fun of D2, for me and lots of friends that played, was that if we wanted to use mods and dupe items and use character editors to play MP with each other, we could. And then if someone wanted to do ladder play, they just had to use different characters. I thought they worked pretty well.

Couldn’t do that in D3. Can’t do it in the D2 remake. Won’t be able to in D4. The only benefit it provides is to blizzard as a good anti-piracy measure. Players don’t get anything out of it.

Since you’re asking, though, I’m curious: what’s the positive for consumers in this design decision? Taking away a feature - offline MP - that can’t interfere with online games anyway because characters can’t cross over, you see that as a good thing? It’s better for everyone somehow?

Yep people don’t care when they can’t play a game when the servers go down. I love having online only games that are useless when the serves for down, especially when it interrupts the single player experience. I mean, it’s fucking awesome to see latency and rubber banding when I am playing alone in the “single” player experience.

As for no one complaining anymore and stable severs, only took blizzard 10+ years to accomplish that.
