Itchy trigger finger on a Samsung CHG90 ... any thoughts?

I'm going through a mixed time in my life at the moment (great professionally, not so great personally / breakup with my girl), so I figure I'll distract myself with some new shiny tech bits.

I was originally going to buy a new TV for my living room but YouTube video heads have said to wait until next year for new sets with the newest / latest HDMI 2.1 / blah blah blah ... so I decided I'm going to upgrade the monitor on my main rig instead.

I've currently got a 40" 4K Crossover (a Korea eBay special) that works fine but I've been looking around and came across the Samsung CHG90 49" which got my attention.

Anyone run one of these? Thoughts?
 
I found this to be quite a nice simple review on the screen itself.



The panel looks great as it's using the higher quality types used in Samsung TV's ( it's half a 4k TV) not the shovelware panel lottery we normally get in standard monitors. You can tell by most reviews how nice the screen is and the FOV blows 21:9 out of the water, again just the freedom of view in the videos looks awesome. However imo it's not high enough resolution. Now if it was two 1440p monitors bolted together @144hz and supported HDR + freesync (also adaptive sync on HDMi 2.1 and accepted a 4k native input scaled to the panel ) Then i would be very interested in it. 5120x1440 @ 144hz should be possible its 1280x720 less than 4k ( 921600 pixels less to be precise ). Given that DP1.4 can supply 4k / 120hz it's not unreasonable to expect a lesser resolution to work at 120hz even 144hz.

Id probably choose a decent 21:9 1440p high refresh over that. It's a near miss. You could get Dell AW3418DW for less.

I'll definitely check out the Dell as well. Looks to be in the same ballpark price-wise (a little cheaper is always good).

Although I do use Excel now and again on this machine (the 4k's vertical is great for that), the lower amount of pixels on the new monitor would be easier for my single 1080 to push anyway. Not sure if the FPS difference betwen 1080p vertical vs the 1440 vertical be that significant anyway.

No problem. The key thing to ponder on is would you buy two 27" 1080p monitors and run them side by side ? A standard 24" 1080p isn't exactly a high PPI as it is, so imagine that stretched to 27".. a mere 82ppi ! If it was 1440p it would be a more respectable 109ppi and give more room for vertical spreadsheet columns.

The CHG90 is the highest resolution available among ULMB monitors today. Only zisworks kits have higher resolution.

You missed the main reason why i consider the CHG90 a true gaming monitor while the Dell is at most a half assed effort : ULMB mode.

The worst ULMB monitor is head and shoulders above the best non-ULMB monitor when it comes to motion clarity.

After a long technical post, i ask permission to give personal advice .

ending a relationship when in are having success in your working life can be a blessing: you have more time to dedicate to sport activities and to perfect yourself in your field of work .
Healthy and wealthy people are perceived as very attractive.

Spending $1400 on f superultramega wide niche gaming monitor achieves none of the above blessings. And you will certainly ditch it if Zisworks kits become a success, or the next generation of 4k + ULMB displays hits the market.
you can get 34" 3440x1440 100Hz on the $540-$650 price range and spend the savings in booze and boobs.
 
Those pics from the russian review aren't pursuit photos. But it's enough to show that the response times of the C49HG90 are very similar to the C32HG70 tested by Tftcentral. It also uses same PWM btw.
The reviewer (=Dead=) also mentions that it is free of overdrive artifacts but shows visible trailing on dark transitions and minor trailing on medium transitions.
It seems that after the issues with the CFG70 series purple overshoot Samsung just decided to turn down the overdrive a few notches - thus reintroducing some dark trailing again.
It was a stupid decision imo, if it is physically impossible on these panels to get a balanced enough overdrive they should at least give the users actual overdrive settings and not just enable strobing on faster/fastest.
Then at least the user would have the option to choose between trailing or overshoot. Depending on the game graphics style one option would be preferrable to the other on a case-by-case basis.
Strobing should have been a seperate option from the get-go. Since the monitors are firmware-updateable now they could theoretically fix this though.

Thanks the reply. As i said it looks amazing, the aspect ratio and the actual panel seem great as the YT review i posted demonstrates. It also has decent enough response times ( i don't think i mentioned that it did not ). I was mainly talking about the vertical resolution and PPI. It is two 27" 1080p monitors attached side by side without a bezel ( basically the lower half a 4k TV ). Again i think it looks amazing, the aspect ratio and the actual panel seem great as the YT review i posted demonstrates. It also has decent enough response times ( i don't think i mentioned that it did not ). For me buying two 1080p 27" monitors @ 144hz even with the HDR implementation is a no go, i love the concept but until it is 5120x1440 @ 120 / 144hz then i won't be buying it.

It's great that samsung decided to make this and many people will be happy enough i expect. But im done with 82ppi nearing 2018.

it does not strobe, it scans. end result is a much brighter image, less perceived flickering , but some double ghosting on the bottom of the display in a few settings

HDR is currently broken on samsung's freesync2 monitors.

Va is still slow when it comes to response times, i only consider using VA for gaming when coupled with ULMB. But people love the 35" high end Gsync VAs. I have nightmares looking at their pursuit camera images.
 
I'm glad I asked you guys (Thanks Geok1ng!). I didn't even know about ULMB, etc. so that's new "google-fu" worthy technical input / always good. I was more of a basic "Does it have enough resolution? Does it have enough hertz?" kind of guy. I think between all the new info and comments (and some YouTube reviews) I'm going to hold off on it for a bit (maybe see how Black Friday turns out) or see if anything else comes along post-new year - along with a graphic card (Volta) and TV upgrade.

As for the other stuff - I know (& agree) - I'm not going to turn into some shutin with a cool computer. The monitor upgrade was just one thing on my list of to do's. Back to the gym / gun range / photo hikes / etc. - no worries :)

Microcenter $1483.99 picked up in store (if you got to have it right now)
 
Massdrop has it for $1100. It no longer is the highest resolution with ULMB as we now have a 3440x1440 ULMB on pre-order, but the price is getting better.
 
The 3840x1080 resolution is a letdown for a monitor this size, otherwise I like the idea of this superwide aspect ratio.

Do we know if games support it? That would be the other big hangup for me picking up a monitor like this.
 
i love mine. i tried all the "top" UW's (seriously, i have a problem). The CHG90 is my favorite by far. that 144hz is sweet and i love the wide aspect for LoL and PubG

nope, its not perfect and would rather a higher res/4k/200hz/blah blah. but it doesn't exist and for $999 on amazon, i think it's a home run.
 
I''m glad you guys talked me out of buying this monitor - it was still close to $1500 at the time when I was deciding on the purchase. Now it's "only" a grand.

I ended up picking up a used Dell 3415 from a fellow [H]'er right here in DC - for a deal to boot!

If you were paying full price, at this point I'd wait for one with either a higher res or HDMI 2.1 or both.
 
Glad you didn't buy this monitor. Microcenter has it on display and it's a very narrow monitor. The width if fine but the top and bottom of the display will
dominate your LOS head-on. Personally I cannot stand narrow displays. I'm still not sure why a lot of people use 24" and smaller monitors.
